Patient Comparisons:

Ormco Damon Q and Forestadent PDS BioQuick System.

Practice: Dr. Anthony Patel – Southlake Texas

Study & Methodology: Patient Charts were pulled randomly for patients who started and finished their orthodontic treatment between 1/7/2014 and 2/22/17.

The Following Key factors have been tabulated;

1. Patient Initials

2. Patient ID

3. Start Date (Bonding Date)

4. Finish Date (Debonding Date)

5. Number of Months in Braces

6. Number of Wires Sizes Used Upper Arch

7. Number of Wires Sizes Used in The Lowers Arch

8. Total Number of Office Visits from Bonding Date to De bond Date.

Notes:

Dr Patel used the Damon System from 2010 through 2014. He attended Dr. Roncone’s JSOP Course and switched to Dr Roncone’s PDS System while attending the course. The PDS System was developed by Dr. Roncone over the decades of developing appliances for 3M Unitek and GAC. In 2014 Forestadent introduced the Physio Dynamic System (PDS). Dr Roncone has taught thousands of orthodontists this simplified approach with Forestadent and past companies.

The System consists of a BioQuick and QuicKlear Brackets in an .022 slot size. The prescription is designed not to fill the slot with Maximum wires sizes, and only using Nickle Titanium and Beta Titanium alloys. to be used is a .019X.025 FMA (P-loop) in the Roncone arch form, which is an arch form much broader than the Damon arch form. Dr Roncone mechanics recommend no Stainless-Steel alloys.

Forestadent utilized Dr. Patel testimonial to help promote the PDS System.

“My confidence as a clinician and a businessman has skyrocketed thanks to completing the JSOP course. Dr. Roncone presents challenges and solutions to everyday practice life that no other course offers. I run three very busy practices and before I took Ron’s course I thought I needed an associate to help run things. It turns out I was wrong. Dr. Roncone’s expertise is evident as he identifies and solves each problem area that practitioners face. From scheduling to streamlining treatment times, all while maintaining a high level of clinical quality. There isn’t anything now that I feel I can’t handle thanks to the leadership principles I’ve learned from Dr. Roncone. Now each and every day I can’t wait to get to the office to do what I love! Many thanks Dr. Roncone!” Dr. Anthony Patel - Southlake, TX JSOP XXVI GRAD

Dr. Patel followed both the Damon recommended wire sequences and the PDS recommend wire sequence in the samples tabulated. The Damon System generally recommends more wires than The PDS System. The Damon System wires go up to a f .021 X .025 Stainless Steel Posted and NiTi finishing wires. It seems in reviewing the appointments for 25 Damon Patients; there was substantially more time in full sizes wires and finishing stages in general. We will continue to tabulate this.

Dr. Patel also followed the PDS Wires sequence which starts with tandem PDS .014 Titanol Super Elastic wires in the PDS Arch form Dr. Roncone recommend those wire stay active for six months before going into any rectangular wire. In some patients he uses a Thermal .018 Titanol. He recommends using a transitional .020 X.020. PDS Titanol. The finishing wire recommend by Dr Roncone is a .019 X .025 FMA Beta Titanium wire with P-Loops. For the most part Dr. Patel followed this wire sequencing in the majority of his 31 PDS Patients tabulated. However, in 6 of those patients a .021 X .025 NiTi was used in finishing which is contra indicated in the PDS System. These 6 patients were early patient tabulated in the PDS Sample.

Conclusion:

The overall quality of treatment was not graded. We would like to work with Dr. Patel and other PDS users to rate the quality of the case finishes. Over all the PDS System proved to:

1. Take less treatment time in months compared to Damon. 19.18 Months with Damon vs. 16.02 Months with PDS – a 16.44% reduction.

2. Take less wires sizes and with substantially less force levels used vs Damon.

3. Use less wire sizes for the upper arch. Damon was an average of 6.88 upper wire sizes in an alloy range of .014 single NiTi to a full size .021 X .025 Steel and Niti. The PDS System was used .014 PDS Titanol to .019 X .025 FMA Beta Titanium. PDS used 54% less upper sizes.

4. Use less wire sizes for the lower arch. Damon was an average of 5.28 lower wire sizes in the range of .014 single NiTi to a full size .021 X .025 steel and Niti. PDS used 40% less upper sizes.

5. Require less treatment appointments. The Damon sample took an average of 16.92 office visits while the PDS Sample required an average of 12 office visits. This was a 29% reduction in visits.

Based on the findings, it seems that the PDS System has taught by Dr. Roncone provides the clinician some advantages and efficiencies over and above The Damon System.

This tabulation was complete by Dr. Patel and Mr. Dan Castner from Forestadent USA. Please feel free to contact us if you want any further detail or information.
